Radiothon at WHUS - 1st Sunday

Hi Folks,

Not only was this our first Sunday of two devoted to WHUS Radiothon, but it was also the first day with thenew WHUS website operational and our new playlist management tool.  Because the tool switches the order of Song-Artist to Artist-Song, we will change our list to match and avoid extra editing required to change it back.

Marti & I had help on the air from Dan Grieder who himself had a great caller response day on his show, "Off The Beaten Track."

Amy Orlomoski (my alternating host on "Bluegrass Cafe") and John Veseskis (from the show "The Red House") helped on the phones, and the team was able to exceed our station-set goal of listener response. We thank you very much for calling in during Red Rooster Party.  We still have one more Sunday to go and part of our time will be likely preempted by sports, so please take the opportunity to call us if you haven't yet during next Sunday's show.

WHUS Radiothon Thank You Premiums from Red Rooster Party

Hi Folks!

The annual WHUS Radiothon takes place starting Saturday February 22 and goes through Sunday March 2.

Red Rooster Party has a precarious time slot this semester because it is shared with sports.  Until yesterday, Feb. 21, we were not even going to have a show for Radiothon, but thanks to the good Lord and His weather, it appears we will now have close to a full three-hour show for the first Sunday of Radiothon; 1pm until 4pm Eastern Time on Feb. 23.

Playlist - 2/16/2014 - Carter Family Redux, Uncle Dave

Hi Folks!

Uncle Dave Macon

It has been a while since we played Uncle Dave Macon, so we played a couple of songs from his last commercial recording session (Charlotte NC, 26 January 1938).  We also heard from Georgia songster, Lowe Stokes and Al Hopkins and His Buckle Busters.  The alternate name of Hopkins' group was The Hill Billies which is the source of the term for this early country music.

We also presented four tracks from the resurrected Carter Family from 1956.  The original Carter Family with A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter essentially ended in October 1941 several years after A.P. and Sara had divorced.  In 1952, Acme Records owner Clifford Spurlock asked A.P. and Sara if they would reunite and make more recordings with the intention of offering them through Sears Roebuck.  They agreed and added their children, Joe and Janette, to replace Maybelle who was already having success with The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle.  They recorded about 26 songs in 1952 for Acme and about another 32 in 1956.  It is not clear how many recordings the "comeback" Carter Family made for Acme because previously-unknown recordings are still surfacing.

Marti's Bunkhouse included Western songs from the big screen sung by Dickson Hall, Roy Rogers, and Gene Autry, and some other gems from Johnny Bond, Sons of the Pioneers, Riders In The Sky, The Bar J Wranglers, and Don Edwards with Waddie Mitchell.

Playlist - 2/9/2014

Hi Folks.

We had a one-hour show because of a sports preemption, but we hope we made it interesting.

Classic country on this show was provided by Johnny Horton, Roy Acuff, Red Foley, and Hank Williams.

Gospel included our Golden Gate Quartet opener, and a live performance for Armed Forces Radio by Wally Fowler & The Oak Ridge Quartet -- predecessors of today's Oak Ridge Boys.

We slipped a little yodeling in the show from Maine legend Yodelin' Slim Clark, and a song from Carolina Cotton that didn't include yodeling for a change.

Bascomb Lamar Lunsford

Old-time music was represented by Bascomb Lamar Lunsford, the western North Carolina song collector who provided a gold mine of folk songs from memory to the Library of Congress in 1949, and J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers from a 1937 session with 3-finger banjo picker Snuffy Jenkins, making music that sounded like bluegrass at least eight years before Bill & Earl hit the Ryman stage.

We also played a couple of old songs from Hylo Brown and Lee Moore -- both well known artists in New England because of their WWVA appearances in the 1950s and 1960s and even later.  The Rural Rhythm label has released some of their 1960s catalog on CD for the first time, and we are happy to share those CDs with RRP listeners.

Marti's Bunkhouse included great western music from Skip Gorman, Michael Martin Murphey, Gene Autry, Riders In The Sky, and Sons of the San Joquin.

Playlist 2/2/2014 - We Are Back For Spring (Sort of...) and Marti Yodels!

Hi Folks!

It was great to be back on the air with Red Rooster Party for the first time since summer 2013.  There are some significant changes in the schedule this time around.  Whereas we used to be a two-hour show from 2 'til 4 pm Sundays, we are now co-occupiers of the three-hour block from 1 'til 4 pm.  Our partner is the WHUS Sports department. What this means is we will be on when they are not broadcasting a game. That means we will only be on here and there.  Today's three-hour show is the only such show until April 6th.

There were several interesting moments on the show today, but the moment at the top of the list has to be Marti yodeling for the first time in public.  It turns out Marti has been practicing unbeknownst to anyone by working with yodeling instruction CDs in her vehicle on the way and back from her school.  She sprung the results on us today and turned out to be quite good, much to my surprise!

Marti's Bunkhouse is the Western music portion of the show.  Marti is the great lover of Western music and programs all of Marti's Bunkhouse. That part of the show is in in blue below.

We had several artist spotlights that included The Quebe Sisters, Hank Williams, Eddy Arnold, Charlie Poole, and The Morris Brothers.  We had some set themes, too, including songs about "you done me wrong," playing hard, and cigarettes in popular music.
